Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple stands at the heart of old Thiruvananthapuram, and the city takes its name from the Lord here – Thiru-Anantha-puram, the town of the sacred serpent Anantha. Mahavishnu lies in yogic sleep on the coils of Anantha, and the idol is so long that devotees see him through three doors: the face, the middle of the body with Brahma rising on a lotus from his navel, and the holy feet. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams praised by the Vaishnava saints.
The seven-tiered gopuram reflected in the Padmatheertham pond is the picture most visitors take home. Inside, long stone corridors, rows of oil lamps and an unhurried rhythm of poojas make it one of the grandest temples in Kerala. The rules on dress and entry are strict, so it is worth reading the visitor information before you go.
The legend most often told is that of the sage Vilwamangalam (some versions name Divakara Muni). The story goes that a mischievous child kept disturbing his worship and, when scolded, ran off into the forest of Ananthankadu and vanished into a great illuppa tree. The tree fell, and the sage saw Vishnu lying on Anantha, so vast that he could not take in the whole form. At his prayer the Lord became smaller – and that, devotees say, is why he is still seen through three doors.
The temple is far older than its present buildings: the Tamil saint Nammalvar sang of Padmanabha in the 9th century, and the shrine has been bound up with the Travancore royal family for centuries. In the 1730s King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma rebuilt it. The idol, made of about twelve thousand saligrama stones from the Gandaki river and covered with a special katusarkara mixture, was consecrated anew in 1731, and the Ottakkal Mandapam – a platform cut from a single slab of granite – was placed before the shrine. In 1750, in the act known as Thrippadidanam, the king dedicated his kingdom to Padmanabha and ruled thereafter as Padmanabhadasa, the Lord's servant.
Inside the walls are the shrine of Ugra Narasimha (Thekkedom) and the Thiruvambadi Sree Krishna shrine, which keeps its own flagstaff and rites, along with shrines of Ganapathi, Sastha, Sree Rama, Hanuman and others. A great stone corridor, the Sreebalippura, resting on 365 and a quarter carved pillars, runs around the main shrines.
The temple also has several old underground vaults (kallaras) in which articles belonging to the deity are kept. In 2011, on the Supreme Court's orders, some of them were opened and their contents documented; one, known as Vault B, has not been opened. In July 2020 the Supreme Court upheld the traditional rights of the former Travancore royal family, and the temple's administration is now overseen by an Administrative Committee chaired by the Thiruvananthapuram District Judge.
